The Power of Breath

Modern life is stressful. Distractions are thrown at as that have us on alert constantly. The news, a pandemic, 24/7 technology access, deadlines, kids, social expectations, etc. You can do a Tech Detox but chances are you will be back, because it is part of how the world works now. and you need to operate in it. We have to find ways to counterbalance all those stressors, as they are not going everywhere. What about a tool you already own, it’s available anywhere at anytime and it’s free?! Drumroll please: Welcome in the BREATH! the most underutilized resource we have to regulate ourselves by ourselves. What if in the middle of a nasty argument you took a pause to take 4 rounds of deep breaths? You will engage the parasympathetic nervous system (relax, rest & digest), regulate your blood pressure, and not react from a place of anger, but respond in alignment with your true purpose. How different would the world be if we collectively BREATH while making important decisions, in the middle of tough conversations, and while rising the next generation of adults?

How to breath: Deep. So deep your belly inflates like a balloon as you inhale. Inhale for a count of 4, hold the air in for a count of 6 and exhale for 8. Doing 4 rounds of this will get you back to your centered self, bring you clarity, perspective and a hell lot of peace. You can do this when you feel triggered or as a “snack”. Just add 2 alarms throughout the day to incorporate it to your daily routine. I like to do it before I get out of bed and as I lay in bed for the night! Ready to try it?
